Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a carefully formulated aqueous urea solution containing 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. This colorless, non-toxic fluid plays a crucial role in modern diesel emission control systems by converting dangerous nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor through the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) process.

How DEF Works in Your Vehicle

During engine operation, DEF is automatically injected into the exhaust stream downstream of the engine. When heated, the fluid decomposes into ammonia and carbon dioxide, which then react with NOx gases in the presence of a catalyst. This chemical reaction occurs within the SCR catalytic converter, dramatically reducing harmful emissions that contribute to smog and respiratory issues.
